Mediastinal masses
The mediastinum is the anatomic area between the lungs where the heart, great vessels, thymus, esophagus, and other structures are located. This odd term describes an area where a plethora of different types of tumors and masses may be located, from lymphomas, to thymomas, to nerve tumors and cysts. It takes an experienced surgeon to know what the right approach to these tumors may be. It is very important to know that not all of these tumors should be removed; many are better treated with chemotherapy or radiation. Make sure that the surgeon you have been advised to consult with is experienced in the diagnosis, and treatment of these rare tumors so that you get the best possible outcome.
